Process, Paper, and Ink; being a designer is awesome.
Good design comes to life through processing: research, concepts, sketches, writing, and creating. Technology may have changed but good design has not. Macs, digital printers and cameras are tools for expediting and easing the process. My philosophy is: it is not a design until it has been printed. I am biased towards print media: brochures, cards, packaging, flyers, banners, and publications. Websites serve
a purpose, however they don’t do for me what ink and paper do.
Textiles and inks engage the senses in a multi-modal way. Feeling the weight, fiber and texture of paper between the fingers; taking in the aromatic scent of a freshly opened ream. Seeing the ink engage with
the paper is an extraordinary process unmatched by digital media.
That position comes to life when the concept, sketches, and process culminate into the final design. The creating is fluid as all the aspects of process overlap one another. Every component is essential to ending up with a good design. A design without research, brainstorming, and conceptualizing is void. When all else is completed and the perfect textile/ ink combination has been selected, the design can be printed. Then the design process is complete.
